A Comprehensive Guide to Cleveland, Ohio’s Art Museums
Cleveland Museum of Art
This is perhaps the most significant art museum Cleveland is known for. An iconic cultural institution, the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) was founded in 1913. Notable directors like William M. Griswold and the museum’s founders are responsible for the CMA’s evolution and expansive permanent collection. Today, it is beloved for its art collections and for the neoclassical and contemporary architecture that houses those collections. Home to over 61,000 diverse artworks, our favorite collections in the museum feature Southeast Asian art, European medieval art, and Egyptian art from decades past.
The museum offers free admission, inviting visitors to explore each gallery space and participate in educational programs designed by the CMA’s staff. CMA hosts special exhibitions and community events often to engage locals and travelers alike. The Cleveland Museum of Art also hosts a vibrant Performing Arts Series that includes a diverse range of performances such as classical and contemporary music, global music traditions, dance, and film. This series is well-regarded for its breadth and quality, offering unique performances that often relate to the museum’s exhibitions or make special use of its architectural spaces.
Located in the Wade Park District just opposite the Wade Lagoon, the museum celebrates artistic excellence across the Cleveland scene, making it a must-visit destination for anyone landing in Cleveland, Ohio. Consult the CMA’s website for current exhibitions.
The ArtLens Program at the Cleveland Museum of Art
The ArtLens program at the Cleveland Museum of Art is a multifaceted and innovative experience designed to enhance visitors’ interaction with the museum’s collection through advanced digital technology. The program comprises several key components, including galleries, studios, and an app.
ArtLens Gallery is the central part of the ArtLens program. It offers an immersive experience where visitors can interact with the museum’s collection in a dynamic way. ArtLens Gallery includes ArtLens Studio, ArtLens Exhibition, and ArtLens Wall.
The ArtLens App serves as a digital guide, providing interactive maps, detailed information about artworks on view, and augmented reality (AR) scanning features. It’s designed to enhance the visitor experience both within the museum and remotely.
Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (MOCA)
Opened in 1968, the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (moCa) is considered a foreground of the city’s cultural scene, showcasing dynamic architecture conceived by architect Farshid Moussavi. Transitioning from a for-profit gallery to a non-collecting, non-profit institution today, MOCA resides in a striking black cube at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road. It has been in this new location since 2012.
This $27.2 million investment features reflective black stainless steel and geothermal wells. Embracing contemporary art, MOCA hosts diverse exhibitions, introducing both established and emerging artists. Beyond art, the institution actively engages with the community through educational initiatives. You can also visit the museum store for souvenirs.
Transformer Station
Transformer Station is nestled in Ohio City’s Hingetown. It serves as a dynamic platform for contemporary photography and visual arts. Founded by art enthusiasts Fred and Laura Bidwell, it joined forces with the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) to extend the reach of innovative programming beyond University Circle.
This historical space, a former Cleveland Railway Company substation, blends its 1924 façade with a modern 2011 addition. Temporarily closed for enhancements until spring 2024, Transformer Station promises an exciting return with a fresh exhibition lineup, the 2024 City Stages concert series, and more. Admission is free, inviting visitors to explore this vibrant intersection of art and history.
The Sculpture Center
Opened in 1989, The Sculpture Center is a cultural hub committed to nurturing sculptors and advancing the sculptural arts. Situated in Cleveland’s University Circle, it hosts contemporary sculpture exhibitions, showcasing both emerging and established artists. Key among its programs is Revealed, aiding early-career artists in creating work free from commercial constraints, propelling them toward successful careers.
The center also manages the Ohio Outdoor Sculpture database, preserving the rich history of public sculptures in the state. Additionally, initiatives like SculptureX support the broader sculptor community.
