A Brief History of the Market

The Round Top Antiques Show has a fascinating history—tracing its origins back over 50 years to the founding of the Original Round Top Antiques Fair by Emma Lee Turney in 1968. What began as a modest event has blossomed into one of the largest antique shows in the United States—attracting collectors and enthusiasts from far and wide.

Origins and Evolution

In its early days, the Round Top Antiques Show was a laid-back affair—initially advertised as a German “Oktoberfest” with a charming biergarten alongside antique booths. The event gained traction as big city dwellers—including notable figures like Ima Hogg—sought to furnish their country homes in the picturesque surroundings of Round Top.

The show’s evolution can be attributed to Emma Lee Turney’s vision and the growing interest in restoring country properties in the Fayette County prairies. As antique dealers and buyers flocked to Round Top, the event expanded, with multiple venues and markets opening along Highway 237.

Growth and Recognition

The Round Top Antiques Show’s reputation as a premier antique destination continued to grow, attracting not only local enthusiasts but also national and international attention. Emma Lee Turney’s initiative in purchasing land and constructing iconic venues like the Big Red Barn added to the show’s allure—offering visitors an extensive array of antiques and collectibles spanning 30,000 square feet.

The show’s success was fueled by the unique ambiance of Round Top, steeped in history and architectural charm. The town’s German immigrant heritage—dating back to the 1840s—imbued Round Top with a cultural richness that resonated with antique aficionados and design enthusiasts alike.

How to Make the Most of Round Top: Tips for Navigating the Market

Navigating the many markets of Round Top can be an exhilarating experience for treasure hunters, interior designers, and antiques enthusiasts alike. With venues sprawling over miles and offerings as diverse as the imagination, a strategic approach can enhance your experience significantly. If you’re a first-timer, here are some tips from the seasoned Round Top visitors at DesignDash to make your journey through the fair as enjoyable and productive as possible!

Remember That the Early Bird Gets the Worm!

Getting there early—whether it’s at the start of the show, early in the week, or early in the day—can make a big difference. The crowds are thinner, and you’ll get first dibs on unique finds before they’re snapped up by others.

Do Your Homework!

Doing your homework before arriving can save you from feeling overwhelmed. Know what you’re looking for and which venues are likely to have it. Planning your route and scoping out free parking in advance, starting from the farthest point and working your way back, can also save you from battling traffic twice.

Practice Your Negotiation Techniques

Don’t hesitate to ask vendors, “Is this your best price?” Remember, cash often carries more bargaining power. If you’re eyeing a big-ticket item or buying multiple items, vendors are more inclined to offer you a better deal.

Prioritize Comfort and Preparedness

Wear comfortable shoes and layers; the Texas weather can be unpredictable. Also, prepare for a lot of walking and potential muddy conditions if it rains. Some areas offer parking for a fee, but parking strategy can save you time; consider parking once and exploring an area thoroughly before moving on.

Check Out Available Lodging and Local Eats

Options for eating have diversified over the years. Whether you crave the simplicity of a brisket sandwich from a local barn or a slice of famous pie in Round Top, there’s something for every palate. Staying overnight can offer a more relaxed pace and a deeper dive into what Round Top has to offer, with many bed and breakfasts available in the area for a cozy stay.

Embrace the Experience

Embrace the unique atmosphere of Round Top. The camaraderie among shoppers, the diversity of items, and the sheer joy of the hunt make it a special experience. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned visitor, Round Top has a way of bonding people with its unique charm and endless treasures.
