Fresh on the heels of High Point Market in North Carolina last month, another East Coast event is gearing up for mid-May. Every May, the global design industry descends upon New York City for NYCxDESIGN, the city’s official design week and one of the largest multidisciplinary creative festivals in the world. Running May 14th through 20th this year, the 2026 NYCxDESIGN Festival will once again turn NYC into a citywide celebration of architecture, interiors, technology, art, products, and culture through hundreds of independently hosted events across all five boroughs.

Unlike a traditional trade fair held inside a single convention center, NYCxDESIGN spreads across the entire city. Showrooms, galleries, museums, studios, schools, auditoriums, public spaces, and retail destinations all become part of the festival experience. That decentralized format is what makes this design week feel so distinctly New York. Your morning might start with architecture tours in Tribeca, followed by interior design exhibitions in SoHo, talks in Chelsea, and receptions in the Financial District by evening.

What Exactly Is NYCxDESIGN?

NYCxDESIGN is a nonprofit organization created to unite and amplify the city’s design community while positioning New York as a global capital where design culture and industry intersect. The organization describes its mission as supporting collaboration, innovation, and the exchange of ideas across disciplines ranging from architecture and landscape architecture to graphic design, entertainment, and technology.

The festival itself has become the beating heart of that mission. According to the official NYCxDesign website, the 2026 edition will feature more than 250 events spanning ten major design disciplines, including interior design, urban design, industrial design, light and sound design, and technology x design.

NYCxDESIGN Festival Highlights for 2026

The official Opening Party will take place May 14th at Halo Twenty Eight on Pine Street in Lower Manhattan. The event has become one of the most anticipated gatherings of festival week, bringing together designers, brands, creative leaders, and media for an evening centered around creativity, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

Other major highlights this year include the “Future Now: Art of the Possible AI Summit,” which explores the rapidly changing relationship between design and artificial intelligence, as well as keynote conversations with Santiago and Gabriel Calatrava and lighting designer Hervé Descottes.

The annual NYCxDESIGN Awards presented by Interior Design magazine will also return during the festival, recognizing standout projects and emerging voices across multiple categories.

This Year’s Exhibitions, Talks, and Design Districts

One of the most unique and intriguing aspects of NYCxDESIGN is the sheer range of programming available throughout the week. The official calendar includes exhibitions, open studios, installations, tours, talks, receptions, product launches, and trade shows spread across neighborhoods like SoHo, NoMad, DUMBO, Harlem, the Upper East Side, Chelsea, and the Financial District.

The festival’s Design Districts initiative encourages visitors to experience how different parts of the city approach design through their own lens. Meanwhile, events like SoHo Design Night and NYCxDESIGN On The Town keep showrooms and studios open late into the evening, creating a more social and immersive atmosphere across the city.

Large-scale exhibitions and interactive installations remain a major part of the programming as well. Design Pavilion by LEXUS returns as the festival’s outdoor public exhibition, while NYCxDESIGN Exhibition: SHINE continues the organization’s annual themed exhibition series.

What to Know Before You Go

Because NYCxDESIGN is spread throughout the city, planning ahead is absolutely essential. We do not recommend flying by the seat of your pants. There is so much to see and do, so we recommend using the festival’s calendar function prior to attending. The official festival calendar allows visitors to filter events by neighborhood, date, discipline, accessibility, and event type, while the NYCxDESIGN app helps participants organize schedules and navigate between locations.

Some events do require tickets or RSVPs, but many exhibitions and installations are still free and open to the public. Visitors should also expect some programming to begin before May 14th or continue beyond the official festival dates.
