Women, In Their Own Words: Mimi Meacham
Summary
In this edition of Women, In Their Own Words, Houston designer Mimi Meacham shares how family life informs her approach to residential interiors, why observing how people actually live often sparks her best ideas, and how intuition, delegation, and long-term client relationships have shaped the growth of Marian Louise Design. Her responses reflect a design practice grounded in practicality, collaboration, and homes meant to be lived in every day.
Reflection Questions
Mimi speaks about drawing inspiration from everyday household routines rather than staged moments. How closely do you observe how clients actually use their spaces before making design decisions?
She describes resetting her creative process at the start of each project to avoid repeating past solutions. What practices help you approach new work with fresh perspective instead of relying on familiar formulas?
Delegation became essential as her business grew. Which responsibilities in your own practice might benefit from shared ownership or clearer boundaries?
Mimi emphasizes long-term relationships with returning clients. How does continuity influence the way you think about design success beyond project completion?
Journal Prompt
Mimi describes design as an effort to understand how people move through their homes and what supports their daily lives. Think about a recent project or creative decision. Where did practicality guide the outcome, and where did instinct take over? Write about how those two forces interacted. Did one lead more than the other, or did they meet somewhere in the middle?
Welcome to another edition of our Women, In Their Own Words interview series! At DesignDash, we love celebrating the women shaping the design industry through creativity, leadership, and deeply personal points of view. Through this series, we highlight the ideas, rituals, and experiences that influence how female interior designers build meaningful careers and impactful spaces.
Today, we’re excited to feature Mimi Meacham, who is Founder and Principal Designer of Marian Louise Design. Based in Houston, Texas, Mimi leads a full-service interior design firm recognized for vibrant yet livable interiors that seamlessly blend aesthetics and approachability. Her work is defined by layered patterns, thoughtful color palettes, and design that reflects real life.
As a wife and mother of three young children, Mimi approaches design through a deeply personal lens. She and her team focus on “crafting a space that truly feels like home” for each of their clients “because home is where our memories are made, our laughter resonates and our hearts will always live.” Her studio specializes in guiding clients from concept through installation, as they craft spaces that feel collected, welcoming, and uniquely tailored to each family. By combining antiques, bespoke details, and playful touches with timeless foundations, Marian Louise Design creates interiors that feel both elevated and comfortably lived-in.
In this interview, Mimi shares insights on intuition, creative evolution, entrepreneurship, and how designing for real families continues to shape her philosophy and process. We hope you enjoy reading Mimi’s responses as much as we did!
Women, In Their Own Words: Mimi Meacham
DesignDash: If you could listen to only one musical artist while working, who would it be and why?
Mimi Meacham: Jack Johnson because it’s easy, upbeat listening that helps me focus on the task at hand while humming along to the beat.
DesignDash: What’s the most unusual source of inspiration you’ve found for your work?
Mimi Meacham: An unexpected source of inspiration for me has been observing how families actually live in their homes—especially in moments that aren’t “designed.” The way kids naturally gather around a kitchen island to do homework, or how a hallway becomes a landing zone for backpacks and sports gear. Those real, slightly messy patterns of life often spark my best ideas. They push me to design spaces that feel beautiful but also deeply functional and lived-in, because the most inspiring homes are the ones that truly support the people inside them.
DesignDash: If you could collaborate with any historical figure, who would it be and what would you create together?
Mimi Meacham: I’d choose Henri Matisse. I’ve always been drawn to his ability to use color and shape to create emotion without excess. If we collaborated, I’d love to translate that sensibility into interiors—spaces where color feels intentional and joyful, not overwhelming. I imagine rooms that are calm yet expressive, with moments of boldness layered into otherwise restrained backdrops. The result would be homes that feel collected, personal, and quietly energizing, spaces that make you feel something the moment you walk in.

DesignDash: Do you have a must-do creative ritual or superstition before starting a project? If yes, what is it?
Mimi Meacham: Before every project, I reset completely. I start with a fresh notebook and a brand new Pinterest board so I’m not influenced by past work or preconceived ideas. It’s important to me that each home feels entirely specific to the people who live there. The most important part, though, is a long, unhurried session with the clients. I want to understand not just what they like visually, but how their family moves through the house, where they naturally gather, what feels chaotic, and what feels grounding to them. Those conversations shape everything. By the time I begin designing, it already feels less like a project and more like a translation of their life into a space that truly supports it.
DesignDash: If your creative work were a color palette, which colors would be essential?
Mimi Meacham: Blues of all tones, greens, fresh whites, tans and camels, moody jewel tones, and a whole host of unexpected pops of color like neon yellow, mulberry, chartreuse, and mint.
DesignDash: How do you manage the business side of being a creative; do you enjoy it or is it something you’ve had to grow into?
Mimi Meacham: I’ve definitely grown into it. Early on, I tried to do everything myself, but I’ve learned that delegating is the only way to stay sane and run a healthy, sustainable business. I wear a lot of hats. I’m a business owner, a wife, a mom to three very active kids, a friend, a sister, and I’m involved in the PTA, so something has to give.
The key has been surrounding myself with good, trustworthy people who know me well and understand how I work. When you have the right support system in place, you can focus on the parts of the business that truly need your voice and vision. It really does take a village, and embracing that has been one of the most important lessons in my career.
DesignDash: If you could only use three tools or materials for the rest of your career, what would they be?
Mimi Meacham: A measuring tape, a paint deck, and my iPhone—those are truly the staples of my day. I use them constantly, often without even thinking about it. The measuring tape lives in my bag because every decision starts with scale and proportion. The paint deck is never far behind; it’s how I fine-tune mood, light, and emotion in a space. And my iPhone is the connective tissue of the day, photographing details on site, pulling references, FaceTiming clients, answering questions in real time, and keeping everything moving. Together, they form the foundation of how I work, from the first conversation to the final install.

DesignDash: How has your creative process evolved over the years?
Mimi Meacham: My creative process has become much more intuitive over the years. I trust myself more than ever, and that confidence has come from seeing design risks play out beautifully time and time again. Experience has given me a clearer sense of when to push, when to edit, and when to let a bold idea lead the way.
I’m more comfortable now taking thoughtful risks—whether that’s with color, scale, or layout—because I understand how all the layers come together in the end. The process feels less about second-guessing and more about clarity, conviction, and creating spaces that feel intentional, lived-in, and lasting.
DesignDash: What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d known when you started your business or creative career?
Mimi Meacham: Go for it. If it’s meant to be, it will be.
When I started my business, I put too much pressure on myself to control every outcome and anticipate every step. Over time, I’ve learned that sustainable growth comes from consistency, integrity, and trusting your judgment—not forcing results. The right clients, partnerships, and opportunities build when you show up, do good work, and stay aligned with your values. I wish I’d understood sooner that patience and commitment are just as important as ambition when you’re building something that lasts.
DesignDash: Have you seen the landscape change for women in the creative industry over the years? What still needs to change?
Mimi Meacham: Yes, absolutely. There’s more visibility and respect now for women in creative leadership, especially those running their own firms. Women are being recognized not just for their aesthetic sensibility, but for their ability to build businesses, manage teams, and lead complex projects.
What still needs to change is the expectation that women must do it all—brilliant creative work, seamless project management, emotional labor, and family responsibilities. Creative success shouldn’t require burnout. Supporting women in building long-term, balanced careers, not just beautiful portfolios, is the next important shift.

DesignDash: How do you think being a woman has shaped your creative vision or business approach?
Mimi Meacham: It’s shaped both my creative vision and my business approach in very real ways. Family comes first for me, and that perspective naturally carries into how I design and how I work with clients. I’m deeply aware that homes aren’t just visual statements—they’re the backdrop to daily life, routines, and relationships.
From a business standpoint, it’s made me intentional about building a practice that respects people’s time, priorities, and seasons of life—both my own and my clients’. That lens leads to designs that are thoughtful, functional, and lasting, and to a business that values clarity, communication, and trust over urgency for its own sake.
DesignDash: Have you recently wrapped any exciting projects, collaborations, collections, etc.? Are there any on the horizon you’d like to share?
Mimi Meacham: I’m really excited about what’s coming up. I’m working on a historic home here in Houston, which is always fun, and even better, I’m collaborating with a close friend I’ve known since our summer camp days. It’s been really special to bring such a long-standing personal relationship into a creative partnership.
I also love that many of our clients continue to ask us back for phase two projects. That kind of long-term trust means a lot to me and tells me they truly value what we’re able to bring to their homes over time.

More About Mimi Meacham and Marian Louise Design
Mimi Meacham is the founder and principal designer of Marian Louise Design, a Houston-based interior design firm specializing in residential interiors. The studio works on renovations, custom homes, and furnishing projects for clients seeking spaces that balance aesthetic refinement with everyday usability. Marian Louise Design describes its work as creating interiors that blend beauty with functionality while reflecting the needs and personalities of each family.
Meacham lives in Houston with her husband and three children, which regularly informs how she thinks about the home environment. In her interview, she describes home as “the backdrop of life, where birthdays are celebrated, milestones unfold, and memories are made.” Her projects often prioritize shared living areas and flexible layouts that support daily routines alongside entertaining.

Editorial coverage has highlighted this perspective in practice. A Houston home featured in Designers Today explored her goal to “balance fresh, elevated design with the cozy, lived-in feel of a true family home,” particularly through indoor-outdoor spaces designed for both play and gathering. The project reflected her interest in combining structured design decisions with environments intended for regular use by families.
Work published in Modern Luxury similarly emphasized Marian Louise Design’s approach to updating existing homes while preserving character. Meacham described one renovation as an effort to “blend fun, playful prints and colors but keep a traditional cornerstone,” introducing brighter finishes and improved functionality while respecting the home’s original qualities. Clients often continue projects in later phases; as Meacham notes, many return because they value what the studio brings to their homes over time.
Through Marian Louise Design, Meacham continues to focus on residential interiors shaped by collaboration, practicality, and personal connection to the way families live within their spaces.
